Team Martin Wins Olympic Gold Medal!
(March 2, 2010)
The Saville Sports Centre (SSC) team of Kevin Martin, John Morris, Marc Kennedy, Ben Hebert, Adam Enright (alternate), and Jules Owchar (coach) has officially reached the pinnacle of the curling world by winning the gold medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
Team Canada amassed a perfect 9 win 0 loss record in round robin play, which advanced them to a semi-final game against fourth place Sweden. After some tense moments early on in the semi-final, Martin and crew found their stride and ended up winning the game 6-3.
This set the stage for the gold medal final against Norway, which had given Canada its toughest test during the round robin. The final was a well-curled affair, but as the game progressed our home club heroes managed to gain control, and ultimately earned a well-deserved 6-3 victory.
While this is obviously a tremendous accomplishment for all team members, it is particularly sweet for Kevin and Jules, who had to settle for a silver medal in Salt Lake City in 2002, and a fourth place finish in Albertville in 1992. This is truly one of those cases when good things come to those who wait!
We know that all SSC members will join us in extending our sincere congratulations to Team Martin. This is a tremendous source of pride for everyone concerned, and something that we will all remember for the rest of our lives.
